Following in the heavy-trodden footsteps of Rage Against The Machine, Annie Lennox and System of Down, five local bands choose politics over sex, drugs and rock and roll to perform at a charity fundraiser.
The event held beneath News From Nowhere, Liverpool’s independent bookstore, is estimated to generate somewhere in the region of £300 for the humans rights organisation Amnesty International.
Event co-ordinators Happy Nation have joined together with Liverpool Friends of Palestine and UAWC to spread awareness of the plight of more than 50,000 homeless people in Gaza.
Performers on the night include Metro Manila Aide, said, “The backing Amnesty has given us is extremely encouraging. We don’t expect to raise an enormous amount of funds but what we can offer is increased awareness of human rights causes. We are pushing issues from the band, the people at Happy Nation were more than happy to develop these ideas and try to reach as many people. We couldn’t be doing it in a better place. It’s small and intimate but this book store has for a long time been a hub of knowledge and awareness.”
Metro Manila Aide last month campaigned for Human Rights of prisoners in the War on Terror, and chose graphic imagery to portray the effects of waterboarding on prisoners in Guantanamo bay among others.
“We’re not trying to change the world or shock people. It’s about creating awareness and opening people to talking about real issues. We are succumbing to a society of gossip, and sport fanatics, obsessed with financial downturn and television.”
The event features performances from Metro Manila Aide, Our Special Guests, Freq, The Lighters and Fretless.
