ROUGH TRADE DIGITAL ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY WILL BE THE ONLY
DIGITAL STORE ON THE PLANET TO HAVE ALL 4 ALBUMS BY CULT BAND THE
RAINCOATS FOR SALE AT LAUNCH NEXT TUESDAY.
For those not in the know, The Raincoats formed in '78 – an aggressive
all-girl post punk band regarded as the forerunners to the Riot Grrl
scene. The Raincoats had a profound effect on Kurt Cobain and appeared
in a hand-written list of his 50 favourite things. Jude at Rough Trade
recalls Courtney and a rather shy Kurt Cobain searching in the shop for
an especially rare Raincoats album. The album was rooted out for Kurt by
the ever-helpful staff and The Raincoats would later re-form as a result
to support Nirvana (though the show, sadly, never happened for obvious
reasons). Rough Trade's founding director Jude's full story is recounted
at link
Kurt Cobain recalled listening to The Raincoats with reverence:
When I listen to The Raincoats I feel as if I'm a stowaway in an attic,
violating and in the dark. Rather than listening to them I feel like I'm
listening in on them. We're together in the same old house and I have to
be completely still or they will hear me spying from above and, if I get
caught – everything will be ruined because it's their thing. They're
playing their music for themselves. It's not as sacred as wire-tapping a
buddhist monk's telephone or something because if The Raincoats did
catch me, they would probably just ask me if I wanted some tea. I would
comply, then they would finish playing their songs and I would say thank
you very much for making me feel good.”
Kurt Cobain, June 1993.
