Ron Sexsmith and Alana Levandoski to play Canada Day

Homesick Canadians mired in underpaid bar jobs across London, and fans of heartwarming singer-songwriters in general, should be cheered by the news that Canada Day on June 30th will be marked in the capital by free performances from two of the country's national treasures, Ron Sexsmith and Alana Levandoski. Both artists will be playing at Fopp's Earlham Street store in Covent Garden as part of the larger celebrations taking place in Trafalgar Square throughout the day. Sexsmith, who will play at 5:30pm, is one of the heavyweights of the Canadian singer-songwriter scene, and has recently released his eighth album, Time Being, following 2004's critically acclaimed Retriever. Levandoski is a relatively new addition to the blossoming Canadian roots scene but her lilting blend of folk and country rock has already drawn favourable comparisons with the work of Nanci Griffith, and her debut LP Unsettled Down is rapidly gaining her fans across the UK and Europe. Her set will start at 6:15pm. The Trafalgar Square celebrations kick off at 2pm and will include street hockey displays, arts and crafts showcases, Saskatchewan dancers and street performers.
