Noise of Art – Spring festival
Celebrating the convergence of music and visual art in the digital age…

in brief… From Friday 28 April until Friday 5 May, Noise of art will be
holding a week of events, transforming the National Film Theatre into a
riverside club, featuring the best projection screen in the country, with
related films and club running from 7pm until 2am, followed by events featuring hot new Parisian acts at BarMusic Hall and the Social, then transfroming Tate Britain into a two floor music venue, with dancefloor downstairs and ambient/chill out bar upstairs, and moving onto a closing party at the Key. Friday 28 April Noise of Art, at the National Film Theatre, presents Nathan Fake performing the live show for his critically acclaimed LP 'Drowning in a Sea of Love' with Vincent Oliver creating live visuals. Nathan performed his debut LP tour show at the Noise of Art launch event in February and we can't wait to see Vincent's images on the state of the art screen at NFT Cinema 1. Plus I:Cube performing 'Live At The Planetarium' – UK debut and second ever performance,
accompanied by a new visuals from artist Tekyes. Both I:Cube and Tekyes come from Paris, but this is only the second time they have met and the first time they have performed together with specially commissioned visuals. The NFT riverside bar will be transformed into a club with live sets from Man Like Me and Les Hommes Du Train and DJ sets from Simon Rigg (Phonica) Adam Barry and Ben Osborne (Klunk Klik / Slipped Disco), plus video art. Saturday 29 April Noise of ARt presents silent movies by the pioneering British film-makers Mitchell & Kenyon with live electronic music played by Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly), Les Hommes Du Train, Vector Lovers, Chris Coco and A Man Called Adam, followed by Spektrum and other live acts and DJs plus video art.

Transforming British film history and providing an amazing window on to
everyday life at the dawn of the 20th century, the films of Mitchell & Kenyon represent the most exciting film discovery of recent times, and they're brought to a new kind of life in this experimental marriage with electronic music. With artists Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly), Chris Coco (Radio 1), Vector Lovers (Soma), Les Hommes Du Train (Train), A Man Called Adam (Skint) playing a seemless live set, we are given a soundtrack that ranges from playground chill out, to warped disco and industrial techno. Old images are brought vividly to a life in a
strangely intimate way. The NFT riverside bar will be transformed into a club.

Sunday 30 April Noise of ARt presents Slipped Disco, with two stars of Paris' burgeoning New French Revolution – Sebastian (Ed Banger) and Kavinsky (Record Makers), Ben Osborne (Train) and special guests from Paris. Bar Music Hall, Curtain Road, Hoxton. Free Entry 6pm – 12 midnight

The latest star to begin to shine on the Parisian electronic scene, Sebastian has already made a mark with his remixes of Daft Punk, Annie, Cut Copy and Benjamin Theves. Signed to Ed Banger, the hip French label that brought us Justice, he's among the top handful of artists spearheading the New French revolution. This is his debut UK performance. Also appearing will be Kavinsky, the latest electronic act to break out of the Record Makers label. Once associated with Air, Record Makers have specialised in artists of quality from all genres and Kavinsky's label mates include the maverick Sebastian Tellier and Arpanet. Long time sparing partner of Mr Oiseau, his music is quite unlike anything else on the electronic scene.

Thursday 4 May, Noise of Art presents I:Cube (DJ set) album launch of 'Live At The Planetarium' (Versatile), plus Ben Osborne (DJ) The Social, Little Portland Street. Free Entry 7.30pm- 12 midnight. Free entry.

Friday 5 May, Noise of Art at Tate Britain, Millbank. The Tate will be
transformed into a spectacular two floor music venue, with a dancefloor
downstairs where visual effects by Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly) and Airside will create a visually stunning club space, while the best looking ambient chill out room you've ever seen will be upstairs in the Duveen galleries. There will be two bars and a restaurant. Music will be performed by I:Cube Live, Vector Lovers debut live performance new video project, A Man Called Adam present Hooked On Classical, Les Hommes Du Train Live, Man Like Me Live, Fred Deakin
(Lemon Jelly), debut showing of new Airside visual work, Product 01 Live, Temposhark Live, A1 People Live, Chris Coco (DJ Set), Ben Osborne (DJ Set) plus special guests and a new film about the Artwork of Devo frontman Mark Mothers Baugh, interactive works plus a collection of films from new Berlin-based Artists – and more to be announced. Free entry 6pm – 10 pm (reserved places
will be available for film screenings on the night and reduced entry flyers for the after party).

About the Spring line up:

I:Cube

Legendary electronic music producer I:Cube released his first single, 'Disco Cubism', in the mid Nineties, backed with a remix by a then little known Daft Punk. He is one the world's foremost house producers as well as forming half of Chateau Flight with Parisian DJ Gilb'r. This will be the first time I:Cube has played 'Live At The Planetarium' in the UK and only the second time the piece
has ever been performed. It marks a new phase in I:Cube's music and explores a variety of musical idioms in a mostly beatless piece of extraordinary electronic music. The music will be accompanied by new visuals performed for the first time ever at the National Film Theatre.

Nathan Fake

Currently the name on everyone's lips, Nathan grew up in East Anglia, but makes music more reminiscent of Northern hemisphere bands such as Mogwai, Boards Of Canada and Sigur Ross. His debut LP is already being described as an album of the year. He will perform his new live show with specially commissioned live visuals.

Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly)

Fred Deakin is half of Brit and Mercury nominated electronica duo Lemon Jelly and one of the founders and directors of design company Airside. He is also a visiting tutor at Central Saint MArtin's College of Art. The scenes he has selected deal with the leisure activities in Mitchell and Kenyon's work – days at the beach, cricket games, the first ever Manchester United game to be filmed and barrel jumping. All the things Lemon Jelly enjoy on their days off. At the Tate he will perform a new Airside work.

Chris Coco Originally the man behind one of Brighton's first acid house clubs, Chris Coco is currently a Radio1 DJ and a producer of records that span everything from classical to dub to house. He has recently been working with Art collective PAM, and painter She One. Chris presents the Blue Room on Radio 1 and he is about to embark on a world tour with Robbie Williams. He has selected films that include a military cadets' display going hilariously wrong, a march past
of children in a playground and a procession of first world war military ships on the Manchester Ship canal. He has created special soundtracks for this project with musical partner Sacha Puttnam.

Vector Lovers

Signed to Scotland's Soma records and famous for live techno club sets and producing the music for car adverts, Vector Lovers is as equally adept at shaking the dance floor as he is at making plaintive ambient electronic music.
Like much techno music, his work is as much about subtle social comment as it is about dancing. His recent LP, 'Capsule For One', was a released to an avalanche of critical praise. His stunning specially written futuristic soundtracks to films of miners and other industrial workers at The National Film Theatre is moving and socially enlightening. His new video work will be revealed for the first time at the Tate.

A Man Called Adam

Ibiza's much loved sunset duo recently signed to Brighton's Skint label and have a long association with seaside music. As well as creating the chArt topping anthem 'Barefoot In The Head' in the Nineties, they've been continually involved in music and Art and currently live and work in Cornwall. For the Noise Of Art festival they will put music to some of the earliest known British film, shot in 1895. Called 'Rough sea at Dover', despite its brevity, it is considered a major landmark in the history of cinema. They will return to perform their usual repertoire at the Tate.

Spektrum

One of the most sensational bands to have come out of London in the last few years, the hot four piece live band and studio unit from South East London. Formed in 1999. It wasn't long before they were on the road, and picking up many fans along the way, as diverse as Richie Hawtin, Mathew Herbert and Andrew Weatherall. With 2 massive singles and 1 album on Germany's Playhouse label already under their belt, which were released to massive acclaim, they have an excellent fresh new album ready for 2006

Sebastian

The next in line to break through after currently too hot to handle Justice on the Ed Banger label, Sebastian first grabbed attention with a cut-up version of Annie's 'Happy Without You'. Following this up with an assault on Daft Punk's ''Human After All' and a mashed rework of Benjamin Theves 'Texas', he was on a roll – as confirmed by his debut single, 'Smoking Kills'. This is his year.

Les Hommes du Train

Formed by Ben Osborne, the Les Hommes Du Train collective produces live and pre-recorded electronic music, swapping between DJing, computers and playing live instruments. The live act can feature up to seven members and for Noise of Art will feature guitars, bass, laptops, vocals and trumpet. For the National Film Theatre they have selected scenes from trains, trams and other transport, and begin with pastiche Seventies library music that merges into guitar driven techno.

Kavinsky

The latest electronic act to be signed to Record Makers (the label started by Air), Kavinsky only stArted making music when his friend Mister Oiseau gave him a computer and some music software. A true electronic maverick, he's busy creating a new rule book – as witnessed by his debut single 'Teddy Boy'.

Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh

Devo frontman Mark, is having his first major exhibition in the UK, on 8th May and Noise of Art will be screening a film, made especially for this exhibition, of Mark at work in Los Angeles both at home and at his legendary lime-green, space ship-shaped studio on Sunset Strip, Mutato Muzika. “We are really pleased
to showing a preview of the Mark Mothersbaugh documentary 'The Visual Art Of Mark Mothersbaugh' at Tate Britain on May 5th. Created exclusively for the launch of his first UK Art exhibition, the documentary shows Mark at work in his Los Angeles studio, Mutato Muzika, talking about both his postcard Art and his Beautiful Mutants work and about the Devo tour of 1990. The launch night of the exhibition itself is 8th May at the Norwich Arts Centre, St Benedict's Street, Norwich. A1 People

A1 People (founded by Simeon Bowring in 1997) have a new line up! Over the years A1 People has had many incarnations and has traversed the breadth of underground Electro as well as running some of the underground's most outrageous club nights (check out The Cathouse!). Now Simeon (keyboards and bass) is joined by Ruth Powell on vocals, Karsten Forsey on samplers and Steve Jones on drums. In the last few months they have hit the road and have played acclaimed gigs from Glastonbury to Fabric and shows all over Europe. Their new
sound takes in influences from underground Electro to future disco and breaks combining live instruments with rock solid dirty electronics and glorious sweeping vocals. They will be performing tracks from their forthcoming fourth album as well as new versions of tracks from their recent EP 'No One Likes a Smartarse” on Satamile records. link

Unabombers

Manchester's Justin and Luke Unabomber (not their real names), won the Worldwide Award for best club, voted for by listeners to Gilles Petersons Radio 1 show, for their acclaimed Electric Chair club nights. They form a perfect pArtnership for Noise Of Art to celebrate their Artfer party with.

Temposhark

West London's electro stars have been creating converts galore with a host of songs that keep the flickeringly moribund nu-electro flame aglow with defiance and decadence, precision and passion, and even the occasional Madonna swipe, never a bad thing if you can steal with such style. Mark Moore (S'Express) was so impressed and he delivered a club remix of 'Blame'. London's most creative circles are embracing them like long-lost paramours and their glam-pop single
'Joy' is poised to awaken the whole world to the thrills their dazzling debut album has in store. Temposhark may be dancing to their very own beat, but they're just the great white hopes you need.

Man Like Me

Having only just released his first single, 'Oh My Gosh', Man Like Me is already gaining favourable comparisons with The Streets. Crossing over between the grime, dubstep, bashment, electro and house scenes, he's destined for big things – and big bass lines.

TEKYES

One of the new breed of young and original Artists working with visuals,
Parisian based, Tekyes produces a dynamic combination of positive forms and rhythms in symbiosis with electronic music. His images aim to open doors to dreams and enchant you with colour and light. TEKYES heightens his audiences power of imagination and looks towards visions from further into the 21st century.
