On September 12th 2005 Reuben release their brand new second album 'Very Fast Very Dangerous' through Xtra Mile Recordings.
2004 was a victorious year for Reuben. After a stop/start couple of years, 2004 finally saw the release of their debut album 'Racecar Is Racecar Backwards' in June. Approaching near-on 12,000 sales and still selling, the album (Zane Lowe's Album Of The Week on Radio 1) spawned two chart-bothering singles in 'Freddy Kreuger' and 'Moving To Blackwater' and won the band a nomination for Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang! Awards. Not bad considering it was self-financed and recorded in a shed!
Building on this success, Reuben (not ones to rest on their laurels) started work on the follow-up, and by the end of the year the band had penned a whole bundle of songs that eventually got whittled down to the 13 tracks that make up 'Very Fast Very Dangerous'.
Recorded at Raezor Studios in London with famed producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro) the album sees the band raise the bar once more, and branch out in new directions. Unafraid of trying new things, Reuben share vocal duties with ex-earthtone9 frontman Karl Middleton (now of Blueprint) on 'Alpha Signal Three', slow things down a bit on the heart-felt odes 'Nobody Loves You', and 'Boy', and experiment with strings and flirt with drum'n'bass on the stunningly inventive and wickedly titled 'Every Time A Teenager Listens To Drum 'N' Bass, A Rock Star Dies'. This is not to say they're not as brutal and raw as on last year's debut – they've merely lifted their game, become harder, whilst remaining tender and at-times heart-wrenching; have become smart enough to sometimes dumb down and play straight forward rock songs and in the mean time, have grown to be real contenders for the mainstream.
In Jamie Lenman's words:
“I think this album is essentially our second album. I see this, our second album, as a collection of songs rather than just 13 tracks. When we wrote it during last year after the first record, we were really trying to create more than just songs, we wanted to have an album that was just 13 solid tracks, and I think that's what we've ended up with. And it pisses all over Scatman Jon's album.”
He's right – it does!
The single 'Keep It To Yourself' is out a week prior to the album on September 5th 2005 through Xtra Mile Recordings and has already made the Brand Spanking New list on MTV2 8 weeks before release!
