General Fiasco – I’m Not Made Of Eyes

A single called I’m Not Made of Eyes with bunny-themed graffiti on a man’s back on the cover? Sounds obscure…

The artwork and title may be interpreted as referencing, or reminiscent of, the imagery of cult film Donnie Darko but the single itself is far from the disturbing, unsettling nature associated with said film.

Ireland’s current hottest property, General Fiasco’s sound is usually easily identifiable – crashing guitars and bouncing beats. This song still features expertly written guitar parts, but there’s a tenderness in them, and in singer/bassist Owen’s insistence: “I’m not scared of the dark.” The uniquely and delicately delivered lyrics are understated, and never overpowered by the heavily strummed chords and effective drum fills.

This trio are clearly men of many talents; though not a sing-along anthem like their last single Ever So Shy, this is a radio-friendly yet remarkable song which stays with you even after the sound of the final chord fades.
