The Lovely Eggs – The Stockroom, Sheffield
The Lovely Eggs are a married couple hailing from Lancaster and they amalgamate the offset quirkiness of artists such as Daniel Johnston with furious and often frantic auditory outbursts more in touch with Sonic Youth. Bicycle bells are met with screeching guitars, xylophone’s are taken over by David’s thrashing drums. The Eggs live experience is like spending half the time in a sweet shop and the other half in a fireworks factory, completely different but both endlessly entertaining. In essence, they are an utter joy to behold. The chemistry between the two is perhaps one you would normally associate with love struck teenagers than a married couple – they exude a youthful and enchanting charm that radiates seamlessly. Ultimately, your face aches a little bit from watching them because you have a big stupid grin plastered all over it the whole time.
‘I like Birds’ is a grunge-pop gem and is in many senses a demonstration in how to write concise and fruitful pop music, imagine Dinosaur Jr with female fronted vocals and minus the J Masics guitar solos. Its not surprising that this was cropping up in end of year lists as one of the best pop songs of the year after its release.
They played through much of their debut LP ‘Eat Shit’ all of which hum, howl and holler throughout their fast paced set. Two new songs are played almost as a live practice (The Eggs have been so busy touring America they haven’t had chance to rehearse any new material). Then this all culminates with the rambunctious yet captivating ‘Have you ever heard a digital accordion?’ which is probably the most fun song ever written and seems to be even more so live.
Its rare that a band can exude such a care-free attitude whilst also making such concise and cohesive pop music – However, this juxtaposition is a consistently rewarding experience and one you wish to live again and again.
