Gothic fairytale-esque twinkly music isn’t as rare a thing as you think, but it is often blended with other sub-genres.
Possibly big fans of the now defunct “Switchblade Symphony”, they seem more pure in their intentions to keep things as childlike as possible – whereas the former band had very diva moments in they vocal work, here it is retained to that of the child.
The songs do try to have more range to them which succeed to varying degrees. “New Nightmare” is a call out to rock-Goth. The elements in place here don’t quite come together as well as you’d may hope. There is an unwelcome and overbearing guitar element in this place that makes the band sound almost like they are trying to be the new Lacuna Coil.
Thankfully the gloomy feeling returns in “Pretty Dead Doll” with a guitar element that is still there, but composed to better effect. “No Strings Attached” is perhaps an album highlight which sees the band take on the world of trip-hop. It’s a song that provides comfort and shivers at the same time. The synth work beautifully encapsulating the vocal work.
The single release of The Butterfly and Ballerina is also included on the album. The former is probably one of the more innocent sounding songs on the album whereas Ballerina has a far more sinister and accomplished polish to it.
There is much to praise about the musical and vocal work created in the album, but perhaps is something to stretch a little further in their next project. “Twinkle Twinkle Little Scar” is impressive for a debut and has many of the right elements in place. Now the band can mature into something that pays homage to their own talents and then give birth to something much more unique.
