Well this time of year may see the chart being topped by new TV singing sensations, but that isn’t stopping musicians like Bernie Kenerson adding to the ensemble of jazz acts that have mounted in the lead up to years end. What makes Kenerson’s sound unique is his preferred use of the Akai EWI 4000. Ultimately sounding very much like an electronic wind instrument. Sadly it is either a hit or miss instrument. Within jazz it could all very well sound like elevator cover music done on the cheap. Jazz purists might well be crying out for something that sounds much more authentic.
That is to say that it has its uses, but perhaps they are very limited in Jazz. Maybe such an instrument would become more of an eclectic item if it were use in music where it were not expected, as opposed to not wanted.
