The Molotovs – Flowers

As the year comes to a close, let’s give three cheers for excellence British songwriting. It seems that every single I’ve come across in 2008 has either been God awful or, like this mischievous debut from southern boys The Molotovs, utterly brilliant.

Frustratingly, most people will instantly compare this to Vampire Weekend which is a fair measurement, after all it’s got that same Paul Simon, understated boogie vibe to it, but this has far more bite in my opinion. Vampire Weekend tracks, though awesome as we all know, take time to settle down for the nuances to come through, but The Molotovs sound is instant with a bang of great British arrogance.

Being placed next to arguably the best new band in the world, these boys surely must walk away with at least a sniff at the title of best new band in the country. No? ‘Flowers’ is a track for anybody who likes classic songwriting, clean melody and Alex Turner vocals. Quality music, just in time to combat the waves of contrite Christmas crap heading your way.
