The Rushes – Corners

Two years after getting signed to a record label The Rushes finally release their debut EP “Corners” (if you don’t count the single “What You Waiting For?”). Ahead of the release of their debut album this year, these five tracks give an idea of what the guys have been working on all this time with producer Victor Van Vugt.

Judging by “Corners” it looks like these guys have set their sites on anthemic stadium filling crowd pleasers. Each track is driven by guitars and keyboards, and while the lyrics are nothing special each song has a pleasant enough melody and plent of amp with “Corners” being the most single worthy track with real mainstream appeal and “Ripping It Down” being notable for it’s memorable guitar riff.

As the EP plays the tracks do tend to blend together, the one exception to this being “Stop It” which is based around a reggae-like percussion and piano making it sound rather Police-like, particularly with Gerard O’Connell’s vocals at their most mournful.

There isn’t much on this EP to start declaring The Rushes up as the indie band of 2008 just yet but it’s a solid enough release, hopefully they are saving the best for their debut album release later this year.
