Sonsie Collective – Sonsie Collective EP

Funk Rock – Has that term yet to be used? If not I want to copyright it right this minute.

Sonsie Collective epitomise the above statement – This EP is clean, slicker than Lewis Hamilton’s vulcanised rubber wheels and is hook laden to the max.

This is not your reviewers bag normally but i have to admit it had my toe tapping immediately and i was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the tracks.

This is not standard funk as SC have thought long and hard about not sticking to too rigidly to the ‘Le Chic’ template. Although Bernard Edwards would drool at the way the bass complements the drums in what is a white hot rhythm section.

Faye Harmey’s vocals are reminiscent of the brand new heavies but with a Beth Orton edge. The songs certainly have a rocky feel which drops in and out of the songs and keeps them ahead of their peers. Slabs of funk drizzled, not drenched in bright wah wah guitar means the sound is fresh, taut and curious.

Opening song ‘streets’ is solid and a great introduction, SC certainly have a conscious lyrically which also comes through in ‘Lay your guns down’. ‘Disillusions’ has an almost indie rock feel about it showing the bands ability to diversify

SC are doing alright. This could be UK Sex Boogie!!
