A Maccabees cover is always going to be a strange choice for a debut single by a so called child prodigy and apparently gifted composer. NiTasha Jackson apparently recorded “First Love” in less than an hour and on two hours sleep as an experiment. Unfortunately there isn’t much reason to dispute this claim.
Jackson, from Tennessee has a clear and pleasant voice but her simple version shows little invention and certainly will not endear Maccabees fans or indie fans in general. The B side, “Bedhead Baby”, ironically follows a very similar musical pattern and does little to inspire or demonstrate any inventive talent. For someone billed as a creative genius it is hard to imagine why this song was chosen to introduce her “talents” to the UK.
This single could perhaps make its way on to a “Piano Moods” compilation but certainly does not make for a significant debut by someone looking to establish her indie crudentials.
