It’s fairly apt that the band behind this single is named 1984. It was after all a good year for music with heavyweight titles and absolutely no meaning or relevance to the arrangement. If in doubt check out ‘Seven and the Ragged Tiger’ by Duran Duran – what does that mean? And while we’re on the subject what the hell is the Reflex anyway?
‘Cache Cache’ may mean something to someone (perhaps soldiers on the frontline waiting for their next round of ammunition), but with barely discernible lyrics it‘s impossible to tell. This is a pity because musically the band’s pretty tight.
There’s plenty of energy in the playing and the vocal delivery, but it sounds like a fighter in a cage – plenty of aggression and ambition, but nowhere to go with it.
Each strike of a chord is like the sound of talent bouncing off metal bars.
There’s also the guitar riff in the middle eight to consider, which frankly sounds like it’s been lifted straight out of The Cure’s ‘Killing an Arab’.
In a previous review I said Badly Drawn Boy’s ‘The Time of Times’ is like a graduation for Indie music. I want to like 1984, but I can’t help feeling they’ve taken the Indie sound to the back of the queue on Freshers registration day.
