It has been one of the most eventful weeks in Bowling For Soup’s almost 30 year history. The Texan pop punk favourites celebrated the release of their 11th studio album, Pop Drunk Snot Bread this past Friday (April 22nd), and it has been heralded by fans and the music press alike as their best album in fifteen years. Yet they were unable to fully enjoy the release of the album as they normally would.
A few days prior to the release of Pop Drunk Snot Bread, drummer Gary Wiseman was taken ill just before the Swansea date of their Crowd Surf The UK Tour. Firm believers in the expression “The Show Must Go On”, frontman Jaret Reddick and bassist Rob Felicetti hastily reconfigured the show from a full band show to an acoustic one (the type they will be performing across England next month). Gary subsequently had to return home to America for medical attention. Similar shows followed on the next two days of the tour in Bexhill and Margate, with a mixture of acoustic and full band performances involving Jaret, Rob, BFS guitarist Chris Burney and members of their touring partners Lit and The Dollyrots.
For the tour closing, album release celebration show at London’s Brixton Academy this past Saturday, the Bowling For Soup extended family came together to give the thousands in attendance a show like no other. Kicking the show off solo with a rendition of their anthem of dealing with the difficulties of life, Turbulence, Jaret dedicated the performance of the song, and the whole show to Gary. Following this, Lacey drummer Dave Pearson, Lit drummer Taylor Carroll, BFS bassist Rob Felicetti, Jaret himself and even AEG Vice President Steve Homer (who originally brought Bowling For Soup to the UK for the first time) took turns behind the drum kit for an assortment of Bowling For Soup classics and new favourites from Pop Drunk Snot Bread. A triumph in adversity, and a show no one – band, crew, friends and fans will ever forget.
For those asking for an update on Gary’s condition, here’s the latest from Jaret:
“Gary is recovering nicely and should be back behind the kit on our upcoming US run in the Summer. A huge thank you to everyone who has asked about him or sent good wishes!”
