The Great Escape Festival 2022: Don’t miss these shows!

As we gear up to return to the seaside for the first time since 2019, take a look below at some of the fantastic rising acts who will also be making an appearance at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton from 11-14th May 2022 – from Faroese punk and genre fluidity to alt pop genius and the down right divisive.

With a live show like no other, Faroese punks Joe & The Shitboys’ shows are ones that need to be seen to be believed. Revered as highlights at a range of showcase festivals already, including Iceland Airwaves, Eurosonic, Left of the Dial and more, Iggy Pop’s favourites also performed for The Great Escape Online last year.

NAOMI BANKS

An artist with boundless depth and fearless devotion, Naomi Banks is a vibrant new talent defined only by her lust for creative freedom. The UK vocalist and songwriter emerged in 2019, after a number of appearances on stage singing for the likes of Laura Mvula and Lianne La Havas, and collaborating on a studio project with Keane. Inspired early on by studying everything from Jazz, electronica, R&B and soul, her career so far is less defined by any one genre as she firmly finds her lane in the alt pop arena.

BILK

Saturday 14th May – Brighthelm – 2:30pm

Fresh from supporting One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson on his most recent UK tour, and having announced their biggest milestone to date – their debut album – Bilk’s boisterous blend of indie, rap and punk is sure to be a hit in Brighton this May. Reflecting on the highs and lows of British youth culture today, their honest social commentary is as real as it gets.

THE HOWLERS

Following on from a sold out UK headline tour in 2021, The Howlers have quickly established themselves as an unstoppable force in the live arena. After the release of their blistering debut EP ‘The Sum Of Our Fears’ last year, the band hunkered down to begin working on new music with plans to release the fruits of their labour imminently, hear it first at their Alt Escape show.

Infectious, iridescent and packing an inescapable sound of summer into their tracks, FLOWVERS have a seamless knack for crafting compelling alternative indie rock bangers. Where previous singles have honed in on nostalgic indie scenes (‘Far Away’) and treaded the boards of post-punk (‘Flowers’ and ‘When It Comes To It’), their latest single ‘Daylight’ unashamedly flirts with massive pop choruses destined to be sung by the masses.

Hailing from Leeds, where she is currently studying, Lois is the latest signing to Fear Records, and is primed to take the alt-pop world by storm this summer. Crafting emotive alternative pop with a soulful edge, her music is akin to the wealth of stunning talent emerging in the UK at the moment, drawing comparisons to the likes of Arlo Parks and Joy Crookes but equally operating totally in her own lane.

THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE BAND

Blistering garage rock from Brighton that bottles the exuberant essence of Youth And Young Manhood-era Kings Of Leon and matching it with the ferocious snarl of Iggy Pop and the compelling lyricism of Lou Reed, The Slaughter House Band wear their nostalgic influences on their sleeve, but experiment with infectious guitar licks and shine a spotlight on singer Raz Hyland’s quintessential raspy vocals to keep things sounding fresh.

HARVEY JAY DODGSON

Harvey Jay Dodgson started playing the guitar at the age of 7 and by 9 years of age had written his first piece of music. Now the 20-year-old singer-songwriter has just released his first EP, a collection of tracks written in his mid to late teens showcasing deft musicianship way beyond his years. It’s an appropriate introduction to Harvey and his exciting trajectory so far, brimming with youthful exuberance it marries the most infectious elements of The Libertines, Vampire Weekend, Tom Grennan and Ten Tonnes.

COWBOYY

Arguably the most ambiguous band on this year’s line-up, Cowboyy are yet to release any tracks but have already done a stellar job at setting tongues wagging. The experimental band hail from the South Coast and specialise in creating a very divisive sound with spoken word vocal delivery and jagged guitars, you won’t hear anything else like it all weekend.

ELEPHANT KIND

Wednesday 11th May – Sidewinder – 5:30pm

Genre-bending Indonesian trio Elephant Kind create alternative indie music rooted in futurism with an acute pop sensibility, driving bass lines, drum breaks and vocal hooks at the core. A forward thinking mix of styles come together to form a definitive sound that effortlessly breaks down the cultural barriers that are a part of their intriguing narrative. The trio are set to release their third album titled Superblue in 2022 having recently signed to Mola music and moved to London.

THE HARA

Following the release of their most recent EP ‘We All Wear Black’, viral Manchester trio THE HARA will be appearing on the final day of this year’s TGE as part of their label Scruff Of The Neck’s showcase. The band consisting of; Josh Taylor (frontman), Zack Breen (guitar) and Jack Kennedy (drums), are gaining notoriety for their “genre-fluid” sound which sees them continue to break new ground sonically.

Since the festival launched in 2006, there’s been little to no representation from the North Atlantic archipelago of The Faroe Islands, and now we have four exciting new artists booked to perform as part of the official programme – a true testament to the burgeoning creative scene currently emerging from these remote and largely unknown islands. Come and discover these for the first time, from the western/electro due Kóboykex to the amazing grungey pop singer Brimheim, heartfelt songwriter Marius Ziska, and of course, our Joe & The Shitboys.
