Album Review

Hazlett – Last Night You Said You Missed Me

Last Night You Said You Missed me is the new album from Australian born, but now Sweden based, folk singer Mitchell Hazlett Lewis – or Hazlett for short. His trademark indie-folk sound and rich emotional lyrics make this an excellent album of moving tracks that are both deep and rich. There’s an honesty to his work, a heart on the sleeve quality that draws the listener into every song. And while there is an undoubted sadness to the lyrics, there is also hope on display.

Tell Me Something, the album’s lead single, explores both heartache and acceptance, the themes of loss and then moving on coming through clearly. The track is typically melodic, with a drum beat underscoring the passing of time beneath the vocals.

Blue Jean also sees Hazlett reflect on loss, yet in a gentle way. The lovely Tell Me Something concentrates on what never was rather than what might have been. Doing My Best seems to sum the whole situation up: it didn’t work out but there are no regrets, no what ifs to ruminate on. The gentle track builds nicely, the melody building to make this a standout track. And the closing Lasso Song sees a contemplative vocal over gentle acoustic guitar that ends the album on a relatively positive note.

This isn’t your typical collection of heartbroken break up songs, but rather something much more self aware and almost nostalgic. The relationship may have ended, but the feelings left are of taking what was good rather than chasing what has been lost.

Hazlett has an expressive voice and delivers his introspective lyrics with emotion and melodic intensity. At times the music is almost ambient, at others a bigger sound backs his words. The lyrics merit close study: there is always a feel of every word having been carefully chosen to reflect on the feelings it represents.

With some big festival appearances achieving rave reviews over the summer and a European tour to come at the end of the year, this is the perfect time to discover Hazlett’s work.
